Thousands of male and female demonstrators took to the streets of Kabul and waved national flags to mark Afghanistan’s Independence Day.
The protest comes only one day after three protesters were shot dead for carrying the flag of the country.
According to several reports, the Taliban responded with gunfire and beatings while tearing down the flags despite their vow to be a ‘moderate’ and ‘reformed’ version of what they used to be decades ago.
In defiance of the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a procession of people and cars gathered near Kabul’s airport to wave long black, red and green banners. Some even raised the flag in Abdul Haq Square to show their resistance.
Demonstrators also marched through the streets in Khost province where one protester was seen with a gunshot wound as others tried to carry him away from the scene.
According to social media videos and witnesses, people also took to the streets in Kunar province to celebrate Independence Day.
The protests clearly symbolize the people’s defiance following the Taliban’s invasion of Kabul and the takeover of almost entire Afghanistan.
In the eastern city of Jalalabad, demonstrators reportedly even managed to replace the Taliban flag with Afghanistan’s flag. Three people were then shot dead.
While the Taliban have so far failed to explain how they intend to lead the nation, they said that they will be guided by the Islamic law of Shariah.
As Mary Ellen McGroarty, the head of the UN’s World Food Program in Afghanistan, recently warned, “a humanitarian crisis of incredible proportions is unfolding before our eyes.”
