The viral trend, which started in Russia, is now spreading across the globe – thanks to social media, especially Instagram.
Medics around the world are warning people to avoid it.
Labeled dangerous and ‘unnatural,’ the trend sees women creating devil-inspired wavy pouts by using lip fillers and makeup in a semi-permanent procedure.
An unusual wave is created on the outer lip after a filler is injected in it.
“You cannot change the anatomical shape of the lips like this,” said Dr Krystyna, a London-based Cosmetic Dentist and Facial Aesthetician.
“You can sharpen and contour by enhancing the vermillion border, but these ‘devil lips’ are unnatural.
“Filler injected inappropriately could end up in a blood vessels, causing blockages and leading to necrosis (death) of the tissue.
“The vessels are around the lips, so using filler inappropriately is what can cause this.”
And for those people who are a bit concerned about the filler procedure, they can always take the less risky route of makeup to get the ‘devil’ or ‘octopus’ lips.
Social media users have a mixed response about the trend, with celebrities like Rochelle Humes labeling it ‘scary.’
“Try applying for a job with lips like that,” a makeup artist said.
On Tuesday, Beauty guru Nilam Holmes took to social media to explain how the trend was ‘wrong on all levels.’
“It looks unnatural and ridiculous,” the Dermaspa founder wrote on Instagram. “The clue is in the title really… it is unnecessary disfigurement! Whether it is tattooing and/or filler… it looks terrible.
“I thought it was Photoshop and a joke for Halloween when I first saw it but apparently not.
“Please don’t be naive and follow silly trends like this. You will not be able to reverse it easily and go back to your natural lips if at all.
“Your lip border will be distorted and it won’t wear off evenly so you will have frilly lips for years to come.”
