World Health Organization has urged countries to prepare for the second, and potentially third, wave of COVID-19 suggesting that fresh outbreaks could follow the lifting of lockdown measures.
As Dr. Hans Kluge, the director of WHO Europe, warned, additional waves of the novel coronavirus might hit countries until we have a vaccine ready.
While private and government organizations and institutions around the world are racing to develop the vaccine and put an end to the pandemic, Dr. Kluge has urged European countries to prepare for “a second or third wave.”
“The key issue is to be prepared, whether it is for a second wave or another outbreak of another future infectious agent,” the director expressed.
“This will require the collaboration and understanding of everyone, not least with the summer coming, that everyone has to do its share while moving to a new reality where public health has to have a more prominent place in society.”
The warning follows as several European countries are lifting lockdown measures and/or easing the restrictions imposed during the pandemic.
As Dr. Kluge went on to say, “Covid-19 is not going away any time soon” and it is up to everyone “to do its share” and prepare for what seems to be inevitable.
“We’re now seeing evidence of a plateau or reduction in new cases. We must monitor this development very closely,” he added, suggesting that things could change in an instant.
According to the WHO Europe director, health has to be placed on top of the priority pyramid because “without health, there is no economy. Without health, there is no national security.”
