The world’s most expensive sheep, a 6-month old ram, has been sold for more than $400,000 in Scotland!
The sheep named Sportsman Double Diamond was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire and was sold for $490,059 (£367,550) in Scotland.
Sportsman Double Diamond is a Texel ram, a breed from Texel that is known for its wool used for hosiery yarns and lean meat.
Sportsman Double Diamond was bought by a group of three breeders – New View, Procters and Auldhouseburn – who plan on using him for breeding other top-class lambs.
His father is 2019’s champion Garngour Craftsman and was the ‘subject of much pre-sale speculation.’
John Yates, chief executive of Texel Sheep Society, said: “This will, to many people, sound like an extraordinary price for a sheep.
“The Texel breed is the number one terminal sire breed in then UK, siring about 30 percent of all the lambs born in the UK every year.”
Yates continued: “This ram lamb has the potential to sire many, many rams which will in turn go on to breed many thousands of lambs themselves.
“This is the very top of the sheep breeding industry in the UK and as such the buyers are investing in the future of their businesses.”
In the UK, the average cost of a lamp is $133 (£00) but high-quality rams can be sold for a lot more.
