The world’s oldest man who was all geared up to celebrate his 112th birthday had to cancel his party due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
Bob Weighton, who resides in Alton, Hampshire holds the title of the world’s oldest man as of last month after the death of Chitetsu Watanabe from Japan. Bob celebrated his 112th birthday on March 29th; 2020, Sunday.
Last year the former engineer and teacher celebrated his birthday with his friends at the retirement home; however, unfortunately, this year it would not be possible.
This is because the supercentenarian, meaning the people who are aged 110 and older, are under complete lockdown across the country. Bob said that everything is canceled; he had no visitor and no celebration. Moreover, he called the celebration a dead loss.
Mr. Weighton was 10 years old during the great Spanish flu pandemic which spread across the nation and killed around 50 to 100 million people. He said that he did not much know about it until he read about the pandemic in the history books.
He said he was not aware because no one of his relatives or people he knew were affected. He further added that there might be some people whom he knew might be affected by it, but a child does not read the newspaper. And, there was no radio back then that could give information.
Mr. Weighton said that with coronavirus, the world is in a big mess and it is worrying that nobody knows what will happen in the coming months. He said contrary to World Wars that he experienced, the COVID-19 challenge comes with unknown aspects of combating the virus.
He said that during the wars, they knew what to do in order to reach the objective; however, today nobody knows how to defeat the virus.
