The oldest panda ever kept in captivity died at the age of 38, which is equivalent to more than 100 in human terms.
Her name was Jia Jia. She and An An, another panda, were a gift to Hong Kong from Beijing. The gift was to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China.
Jia Jia celebrated her last birthday in August. Since then, she has shown signs of deteriorating health due to old age. Everyone knew the day would have to eventually come, but it was a sad day for the park when Jia Jia had to be euthanized in order to save her from further sufferings.
Jia Jia outlived her life expectancy by more than 8 years. Her presence as a symbol of Hong Kong’s theme park will be missed. People will remember her fondly in their hearts.
