For all the advances in medical science, there are some cases that only highlight that doctors don’t know everything.
The incredible case of Sarah Scantlin is one of those rare occasions.
Sarah was only 18 years old in 1984 when she was run over by a drunk driver. Due to the severe injuries she sustained, the part of her brain that governed speech was removed. Doctors said that she would be in a vegetative state for the rest of her life, which they expected would last for only another 5 to 10 years.
She was in a coma for 8 weeks after the accident and was in a minimally conscious state thereafter. Twenty years later, in 2005, she astounded everyone, especially the doctors, when she started speaking again. It was totally unheard of before then and doctors could not explain how this was possible.
A documentary by Only Human explores the incredible story of Sarah Scantlin and her indomitable will to live beyond everyone’s expectations. It was enough to call her “The Real Sleeping Beauty.”
Sarah’s story is truly amazing and the moment she sang her dad “happy birthday” after 20 years of silence will bring tears to your eyes:
Sarah Scantlin passed away in 2016 soon after she turned 50, but not before making up for the lost 20 years by making new and happy memories with her loved ones.
