A WWII veteran shaved his hair into a mohawk to spread some cheer amid the coronavirus outbreak.
96-year-old Guy Whidden from Maryland first wore a mohawk before D-Day to intimidate Germans.
He was a 20-year-old paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division in 1944 when he first styled his hair into a mohawk as the idea was to frighten German soldiers on the field.
Mr. Whidden was the only person in his unit who sported a mohawk that day. But he shaved it off when a lieutenant commanded him to do so.
Even though he regrets not keeping the style, the WWII veteran said the coronavirus pandemic inspired him to bring the haircut back hoping the fearless cut would bring laughter while paying tribute to his fallen comrades.
In an interview with The Frederick News Post, he said: “A lot of people are going through a lot of problems with the [coronavirus], some of them are frightened, some of them are just concerned, and they’re locked in and it gets boring to a certain extent.
“I just thought this would add a little humor or something to the whole thing.”
A video of his transformation showed Mr. Whidden wearing a blue barber’s cloth as his granddaughter, Lydia Arshadi, used an electric shaver to create the style.
Almost 20 minutes later, Mr. Whidden was sporting his fearless mohawk once again.
“I feel like a young buck!” he expressed, adding that “It turned out pretty good, expect it’s gray.”
“I’ve always been optimistic all of my life. A smile goes a long ways,” he added. “So I thought that might create a little interest among my airborne friends, a lot of them who are currently airborne, not just the old timers like myself. I don’t think any of them are interested in wearing a mohawk. But I’d like to.”
Photos of servicemen sporting mohawks have flooded social media after Mr. Whidden’s video went viral.
