Our home freezer is our most convenient food preserver.
This keeps us from going to the grocery or meat shop daily. We can save hours out of busy schedule by having our grocery just once or twice a month especially if we have a big fridge with a big freezer.
However, despite the fascinating convenience of this invention, there’s still one thing missing. How do we know if there was a power outage while we were gone and the food just refroze but isn’t any more suitable for consumption? This can happen especially when we go on long vacations.
Thanks to a brilliant woman, Sheila Pulanco Russell, she made up for that missing feature of our fridge with a simple trick. I guess you can call this a freezer hack these days. You only need a cup of water and a coin.

Although she may not have been the one to first think of the idea, she played the major role in spreading this helpful tip on Facebook. Here is her exact post:
“I just heard a great tip.
It’s called a ‘One Cup Tip’.You put a cup of water in your freezer. Freeze it solid and then put a quarter on top of it and leave it in your freezer.”

You may already get the gist by this time, if not you should be thrilled. She explains further.
“When you come back after you’ve been evacuated (She’s talking about times prior to a threatening natural disaster where households are required to temporarily their homes for the shelter until the danger is gone.), you can tell if your food went completely bad and just refroze, or if it stayed frozen while you were gone.
ADVERTISEMENT If the quarter has fallen to the bottom of the cup that means all the food defrosted and you should throw it out.
But if the quarter is either on the top or in the middle of the cup then your food may still be ok.
It would also be a great idea to leave this in your freezer all the time and if you lose power for any reason you will have this tip to fall back on. If you don’t feel good about your food, just throw it out.
ADVERTISEMENT The main thing is for all to be safe.”
There you go. You now have a power-loss-food-gone-bad indicator.
