When it comes to pets, almost nothing comes close to dogs when it comes to being loyal and enthusiastic. While cats are also commonly found as pets, they live in a world of their own where they probably consider you as the pet. So, dogs it is.
However, there are exceptions for the dog being tagged as “man’s best friend” in the form of this amazing duck who greets this young boy as he comes home from school every day. The eight-year-old gets off the school bus at the same spot each day and there waiting patiently for him on the long driveway is none other than his duck friend.
The video shows the boy slowly walking towards the duck and calling out and the duck joyously quacks as he waddles towards his friend.point 217 |
As the boy stoops down to pet the duck, it gives a happy quack and even starts nibbling on the boy’s pants, just as a dog would, and it’s as if he’s saying, “Don’t you know how long the day has been without you?”point 205 | 1
Finally, the duck wags its tail, yes, just like a dog, and then starts making it way back home with his friend in tow. It’s a routine the two have been following for years now every day at 3 p.m. when the school bus drops the boy off.
If you’re curious just what species the duck in the video is, it’s a male Mallard Duck. They can be found throughout North America, North Africa, and Eurasia and recently, they were introduced to Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, and other parts of the world. So they’re not really rare.
Male members of the species are distinguished by their bright and shiny green heads with a bit of gray on the wings and belly.point 209 |
Some regions actually consider this type of duck to be invasive.point 54 | They’re also known to be very adaptable which explains why they have been successfully spread to different countries with varied climates across the world.point 192 | 1
Mallards are omnivores and can survive on a wide variety of food. While they usually graze in fields or peck around in the water, they are also known to eat frogs and small fish. Some reports out of Romania even say Mallards have been seen eating small migratory birds.
While ducks need to watch out for snakes, skunks, and raccoons, one of their most dangerous predators is the common fox. Luckily for this duck, he’s safe and sound with his best friend at the farmhouse.
