The former Zappos CEO has passed away on Friday aged 46, nine days after he was rescued from a house fire in Connecticut.
The revolutionary entrepreneur who was worth $840 million was airlifted to a hospital in Bridgeport. His brothers Dave and Andy were with him during the tragic incident but they managed to escape from the blaze.
According to property records, the house was purchased by Hsieh’s business associate in August, the same time he retired from Zappos.
Chief of New London firefighters Thomas Curcio said the alarm was raised at 3:30 am on November 18 and they were informed that someone was trapped in the house.
All fire vehicles of New London responded to the scene.
Chief Curcio said that firefighters pulled the victim out of the house and started CPR. He was rushed to Lawrence Memorial Hospital in New London before he was airlifted to Bridgeport Hospital.
Sadly, Hsieh passed away on Friday with his loved ones by his side, The Associated Press reported.
Hsieh, a son of Taiwanese immigrants, was born in Illinois and studied at Harvard University before he joined ShoeSite.com, the former name of Zappos, in 1999.
In 2009, Zappos was sold to Amazon for $1.2 billion but he remained with the company until his retirement.
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak wrote on Twitter: “Tony Hsieh played a pivotal role in helping transform Downtown Las Vegas.
“Kathy and I send our love and condolences to Tony´s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Ivanka Trump, who previously had a shoe line sold on Zappos, also paid tribute to Hsieh, writing: “Celebrating the life while mourning the loss of my dear friend Tony Hsieh.
“Tony was a deeply original thinker always challenging me to reject conformity & follow my heart. Tony was driven by the mission of delivering happiness & brought joy to all who knew him.”
